Local: What brings you here? How long have you been in Belgrade?
Foreigner: I’ve only just arrived. I’m here for both business and pleasure. Are there any customs I should be aware of?
Local: Sure! When greeting someone, a firm handshake and direct eye contact are considered polite.
Foreigner: That’s good to know. Any other tips?
Local: It’s also polite to try a bit of everything served and to compliment the food. Also, it’s common to clink glasses before drinking. You must try our traditional dish called ćevapi, grilled ground meat served with flatbread. Also, rakija, a strong plum brandy.
Foreigner: Sounds interesting. What is Serbia famous for?
Local: Have you heard of Novak Đoković? He’s a tennis player and one of the most successful athletes in the world. How about Nikola Jokić, an NBA star? Nikola Tesla was a visionary scientist and inventor who revolutionized the world of electricity.
Foreigner: Amazing! What are some must-see places in Belgrade?
Local: Kalemegdan Fortress is worth a visit. It is situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, offering breathtaking views of the city. Take a walk down Knez Mihailova Street – a famous pedestrian zone. Don’t miss Skadarlija, known for its cobblestone street and taverns.
